Exploring Aruba: A Balance of Adventure & Relaxation
In partnership with Aruba Tourism Authority.
As 2019 came to an end, I had the opportunity to take one final trip of the decade. But honestly, with so many recent changes (moving to Los Angeles, spending the summer in Europe, and starting a new full-time job) I knew that I wanted the end of the year to be about exploration, but more importantly — feeling, being, and enjoying every moment. That’s why we decided to venture out to the Caribbean, (my first time, btw) and visit “One Happy Island” — Aruba.
Although we woke up to shoot before anyone else was up, we also did things like “normal people” who vacation. That’s why this blog post will not just be about beautiful photography but a compressive overview on how to feel Aruba and all that it is. Below I’ll include memorable dining experiences, Aruba’s art and culture as well as how to fill your days with adventure.
If you’re feeling adventurous:
1) Arikok National Park - Quadirikiri Cave
This National Park is approximately 20% of the island and is such a neat place to explore. We spent most of the afternoon just driving around aimlessly. We didn’t have a 4x4 (which is what you will need to explore most of these spots) but we were able to stop by a super memorable spot known as the Quadirikiri Cave.
The cave itself is filled with bats (!!) and these guys actually show off and fly around quite a bit. Don’t worry though, they were all really friendly!
2) Arikok National Park - Natural Pool
Another incredible site at Arikok National Park was the Natural Pool located by the Bushiribana Ruins. What I loved about this place was that the enclosed pool felt so safe to swim and relax but the waves on the other side were crashing onto the rocks with such intensity. I also learned the hard way that it is much easier just to jump in to the pool versus maneuvering yourself around the rocks. Luckily, you can get to this place without a 4x4, as well!

If you’re a major foodie:
1) Elements Restaurant at Bucuti & Tara.
Possibly the most romantic dining I’ve ever experienced. Situated on Eagle Beach, our evening included sophisticated dishes and the most serene beach atmosphere. We opted for a cabana on the sand which had an incredible pre-fix menu. Bucuti & Tara is an adult-only hotel and you can feel the peace and calmness of dining at Elements.
The staff was incredibly nice as well and later emailed me with the recipe to the mushroom soup that I fell in love with. This place is a must try! (Leave a comment if you’re interested in the recipe.)
2) Flying Fishbone
This place is a dream. Your feet are caressed by the warm water as you indulge in the freshest seafood, surrounded by twinkle lights and a lively atmosphere. We wanted a table in the water because it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but the options to dine on the sand are just as incredible!
3) Screaming Eagle
We were so excited to try this place for many reasons. First off, who doesn’t like dining in bed? Secondly, the uber-talented chef Erwin Hüsken won Caribbean Chef of the Year and lastly, the reviews were phenomenal.
The menu at Screaming Eagle has so much boldness and experimentation. If you’re looking to keep it safe or try something local (& wild) THIS is the place to go!
One again, I loved the option to sit on the terrace for a traditional dining experience or opt for an intimate lounge-feel.
And if you’re into wine… the selection here is top notch!
In Aruba, you can indulge in traditional dishes inspired by the diverse heritage: from Dutch bitterballen to rich curry goat and dishes from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. And with over 250 restaurants to choose from, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re after some culture & arts:
Never have I ever visited a Caribbean island where 4 distinct languages are spoken --- Dutch, Spanish, Portugese and Papiamento (& everyone speaks English, as well).
On our way to Baby Beach, we decided to visit the San Nicolas art murals. Artists from all over the world (as well as locals) participated in the Aruba Art Fair to create these masterpieces. We had a perfect afternoon exploring all the unique historical architecture. 🎨
If you’re after mind & body wellness:
And of course, all things water:
One of the most memorable moments was snorkeling in Aruba’s beautiful water surrounded by colorful fish. We spent an afternoon with Pelican Adventures — stopping by a famous ship wreck as well as enjoying dancing, swimming, tanning and socializing on a really fun island tour.
We also finished our trip with Red Sail Aruba — where we had a relaxing evening of socializing and just enjoying the moment. Highly recommend this for couples, singles as well as families.
We only spent 4 days in Aruba and because of how accessible the island is, we were able to see and feel so much!
If there’s anything else I can leave you with — Aruba adventure vacations are the perfect way to balance the serene beauty of its relaxing beaches paired with the untamed and gorgeous natural wonders. I do hope you visit!
