Zermatt, Switzerland
My Impressions
Did you ever take the moment to contemplate the pyramid shaped, mountain peaked Toblerone chocolate as you stuff it in your mouth? Before experiencing the Alps, I'd just stuff my face too... but that's a mini Matterhorn you're eating - & besides it being delicious, ITS THE MOST MAGNIFICENT, MAJESTIC, & MYSTICAL mountain of all mountains! Seriously though, this thing is legit - & so is Zermatt, this picturesque, car free village that blew my mind. Oh and that jacuzzi on my photo - that's here too. Here are the things you should know before you experience the Swiss Alps.
5 things to remember when visiting Zermatt
1. Pick a killer place to stay — like 2,1,641 feet above sea level
In our case, we stayed at the Riffelhaus 1853 and it did not disappoint. The cleanliness and coziness of the room added to the ultimate Swiss experience (beautiful wooden, minimalistic feel) BUT — you're really staying here to experience the 'best sauna/hot tub view'. The hotel is conveniently steps away from the lift making it an ideal spot for skiing lovers.
2. This is a car-free city — hello, Glacier Express
Well, we missed that memo... & got ridiculously dirty looks as we scurried our way out (but really, where are the signs?!). Basically, the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn is the best way to get into the city. From there you can transfer onto the Gornergrat railway and experience some more of those amazing views including the Matterhorn itself, the Breithorn (4164m), the Monte Rosa (Europe's second-highest peak, at 4633m), and the Gornergletsher glacier (the second longest glacier in the Alps). Expect crowds. (There's still snow out there, even in July).
3. You get what you wake up for
Want to experience the Matterhorn's reflection in the iconic Riffelsee alpine lake? It's about a 30-45 minute hike from the Riffelhaus that we undertook at 6 am in the morning. It kicked my butt but it was SO worth it. Heres proof you should give up your sleep for this view.
4. You need chocolate in your life — Swiss Chocolate
Walking around the city, you'll run into the cutest bakeries & shops. We stopped into Chocolaterie Laderach - offering hand made goodies. Perfect for gifting.
5. There are many adventure thrilling activities — pick at least one
If you go to a place like Zermatt, you HAVE to try something you've never done before. From helicopter rides, to sunrise bike rides, I wish I had more time but Zermatt is so stunning, you'lle even have the best time walking around. For more activities, click here.
I can't even begin to imagine the intensity of this place as a Winter Wonderland. The Swiss have perfected their little resort town and it doesn't seem to matter what time of the year. Point being, Zermatt awaits you for a killer time.
